Description
Highfields Barns presents an exciting opportunity to create a collection of 6 barn conversions through the sympathetic conversion of a group of traditional agricultural buildings. The scheme comprises the conversion of a former threshing barn, dairy block and associated extensions to create a number of individual homes, retaining the agricultural character and traditional features of the existing buildings.
The former threshing barn, positioned towards the front of the site, is understood to date from the late Georgian to early Victorian period, broadly between 1780 and 1850. Constructed principally of coursed limestone with areas of roughly dressed stone, the building provides a distinctive historic character and is proposed to be divided into two residential dwellings.
To the rear and right-hand side of the site is an L-shaped former dairy range, extending to approximately 27.5 metres in length. The building reflects a number of phases of historic development, with traditional stonework complemented by later red brick elevations and an asymmetric roof form. This range is proposed to accommodate further residential units, together with associated ancillary accommodation.
An additional red-brick extension and adjoining open-fronted barn form part of the overall conversion proposals, providing further accommodation and contributing to the creation of a cohesive residential development whilst retaining the character and form of the existing agricultural buildings.
The buildings retain traditional roof structures incorporating timber trusses, purlins and rafters, together with a number of features reflecting their former agricultural use. At the time of inspection, the barns were vacant.
The proposed development therefore offers the opportunity to create individual homes with a strong sense of character, combining the architectural qualities of traditional farm buildings with the requirements of modern residential living in an attractive rural village setting.
